This Scheme encourages farmers to combine the establishment of high nature-value woodland with their participation in the Rural Environment Protection Scheme (REPS). The establishment of such woodland, which is designed to maximise its environmental contribution will attract an annual premium that for a period of 5 years, exceeds the corresponding premium available under the Afforestation Scheme.
The Scheme provides an opportunity to create woodlands that can contribute more to landscape character, biodiversity enhancement, the retention of local habitats, promotion of native species as well as further protection of water resources and our archaeological heritage. It also supports the quality of rural life by providing employment and amenities and ensures a sustainable supply of timber. Forestry makes an important contribution to combating climate change.
